Tips to improve your grill skills

At Tefal, we’re all about making your life easier and more enjoyable in the kitchen. Having the right equipment and tools is important, but there’s a few things to keep in mind before you start grilling that will help you get the best possible results.

Marinate to make it great

Great grilling results start with marinating your meat. Not only does a marinade provide great taste and moisture, but it can help tenderise tougher cuts of meat and provide a barrier to charring once your meat is on the grill.

For the best results, your marinade will need:

  • An acid to help tenderise meat (such as lemon or lime juice, vinegar, wine or beer)
  • Herbs (such as parsley, oregano, rosemary or thyme) and spices (such as paprika, turmeric or cumin) to provide mouth-watering flavours
  • Extra virgin olive oil to add moisture
  • Time to absorb the flavours (ideally overnight)

Don’t forget to refrigerate any food that you are marinating for any longer than 30 minutes, and save a small amount of marinade to baste while you grill (don’t use the marinade your raw meat was soaking in).

Get the temperature of your meat just right

Too often we take meat from the refrigerator and toss it straight on the grill. Think ahead when you’re going to be grilling and take steak, chicken, lamb, pork and even fish out of the fridge 1 - 2 hours prior.

This helps get it to room temperature which is ideal to provide juicier and more evenly cooked meat. It will also assist in ridding your meat of inherited flavours and aromas from other items it was sharing the fridge with.

Keep it cheap and cheerful

One of the best things about grilling is that you get great results without buying the most expensive cuts of meat. As well as delicious meals, grilling can help you fight inflation in the kitchen with affordable cuts of meat including chicken wings, thighs and drumsticks; ground beef and back ribs; pork shoulder; and family favourite hot dogs.

Round out your meal with these grill-worthy vegetables – capsicum, onion, zucchini, mushrooms, eggplants and whole corn.

Ready, set, grill

Now you have the equipment, knowledge and skills to grill, so you can delight the family with delicious, flavoursome and healthy meals that can be enjoyed without having to worry about cleaning a messy BBQ afterwards. Happy grilling!
